Connected Car Playbook: How to test digitised car processes

March 9, 2022
Since High Mobility’s connected car data is not relying on additional hardware instalments it can be tested and evaluated in a simple 3-step process. To make things easy, we have provided checklists to test and integrate your own personal connection to your fleet’s cars.

1 - Discovery

The best way to start with connected car services is to discover the most common scenarios where live car data fulfils the purpose of increasing automation, leveraging overall transparency, or gaining more efficiency.

  • Select your connected car use case: To start your evaluation, pick one of our most popular use cases or customize your very own one by combining multiple data points from our data points list. You are not sure which connected car scenario would work for you? We will be happy to give free consultation. Book your slot here.
  • Check car eligibility: Lots of cars come with integrated connectivity services already. To find out which models could be used for evaluating your connected car service we have published an overview on our web page.
  • Inspect available data points: As our supported OEMs have different technical capabilities, they also do provide different subsets of data. The best way to check availability is to create an account at the High Mobility platform, set up a new cloud app with your preferred name and select data points suggested by the use case overview by hitting „Choose Permissions“. Now you will see an overview of which brands could already support your use case. Save changes to later use those permissions for your prototype.

2 - Prototype

Testing connected car use cases is simple and straightforward - even if you have no access to eligible cars and do want to integrate the digital interface right away. Learn how to simulate your use case using the free car simulator and our dedicated dashboard app.

  • Create your digital twin car: High Mobility provides a free car simulator that sends dynamic data in the same way its physical relatives do. In the “Build” module, navigate to “Simulation studio”, add a new Cayenne emulator, find a name for your car and save changes. Go back to your app by heading back to the “Build” module and link the car you have just created.
  • Setup the vehicle sample app: If you like to integrate connected car data right away, have a look at our Getting Started Guides. For everyone without any development capacities, we provide an open-source vehicle sample app that integrates our API and can be used free of charge. Please follow the steps listed here to set it up.

Although no additional software development is required, the initial configuration will be necessary. We are glad to help and provide guidance for each step. Feel free to contact our support team at any time.
  • Simulate your use case: Navigate to the “Develop” area at High Mobility, select your app and launch your car emulator. Using “Capabilities” you can customize every value your car’s data points should have as well as create and replay simulated trips in “Simulations”. In a new tab, open your sample app and start adding a new vehicle. Grant access to your car simulator. Now you can simulate your preferred use case using the digital twin car and see results in your sample app.

If you prefer to test with real cars, create your application in the live data module and submit it for review. Use the credentials supplied there for your dashboard sample app setup.

3- Delivery

When connected car data is fully embedded into existing processes, toolsets and applications it will leverage sustained value and will be highly appreciated by the company’s team members, drivers and clients. Here is how the integration can be turned into an executable project:

  • Choose target application(s) and onboard development team: After having decided which application(s) should be enhanced with live car data the full development team can be onboarded to the High Mobility platform. You can create a team and invite team members by clicking on the profile icon at the High Mobility platform. Using the “Teams Station” everyone has access to joint car emulators, app credentials and permission settings.

We provide free technical walkthroughs and technical kick-off sessions for your team. Book your slot here.
  • Integrating and testing the API: Check out our technology overview to learn which API technology would fit best. We offer a REST, GraphQL and MQTT API as well as SDKs for iOS and Android. Using our test environment, you can easily connect to the assigned car emulators and simulate multiple scenarios to check if your integration is performing according to your expectations.
  • Checkout and launch your solution: Go to the “Live Data” module, create your application container and select the permission set you need for working with real cars. Additionally, you will receive pricing information and your API credentials. Please submit your app to become approved to use data from connected cars. In case you are working on a fleet-related scenario, we will ask you to sign our fleet contract.

That’s it! You can now start adding cars to your service and benefit from more automated, transparent processes that lead to better decisions at the right point in time.
